What Is Shariah-Compliant
Investing?
Shariah-compliant investing is a framework for building and managing wealth that adheres to the principles of Islamic law (Shariah). It is not simply about avoiding certain industries — it is a comprehensive approach to finance that emphasises transparency, fairness, and genuine economic activity.
The prohibition of interest or usury. In Islamic finance, money may not generate money simply by being lent. Returns must come from genuine business activity, trade, or legitimate investment.
Highly speculative instruments — certain derivatives, short-selling structures, and products with unclear underlying assets — are excluded as they involve excessive uncertainty.
Certain industries are inherently prohibited regardless of financial performance: alcohol, tobacco, conventional banking, weapons, gambling, and pork.
Shariah finance encourages investment in real businesses that create genuine value — not purely financial instruments that profit from leverage or speculation.
The distinction between Halal and conventional investing is not merely theological — it reflects a fundamentally different philosophy about what investing should be. Conventional finance often treats money as a commodity that generates returns simply by being lent. Islamic finance insists that returns must come from genuine economic participation: from ownership, risk-sharing, and real business activity. This is why Shariah-compliant portfolios tend to be concentrated in asset-light, productive businesses rather than financial intermediaries.

Note on Performance
Shariah-compliant investing is a principled discipline — not an investment strategy that guarantees superior returns. Markets involve risk and past performance is not indicative of future results. Our advisory is designed to help you invest ethically and sensibly — not to promise outcomes.
Why Shariah-Compliant Investing
Makes Sense Beyond Faith.
Avoids Financial Fragility
By excluding excessive leverage and speculative instruments, Shariah-compliant portfolios often show lower volatility during market stress. The 2008 financial crisis, driven largely by interest-based instruments and speculation, largely bypassed Halal portfolios.
Aligns Ownership with Values
Knowing that every business you hold has been evaluated for ethical business practices — not just financial performance — creates a confidence in your investments that purely return-driven investing cannot.
Encourages Long-Term Thinking
Shariah finance discourages short-term speculation and encourages patient, fundamentals-based investing. This philosophy aligns naturally with sound wealth-building principles regardless of faith background.

How We Maintain
Shariah Compliance.
Initial Screen
Every candidate asset is passed through an initial Shariah screen. Companies operating primarily in prohibited sectors are eliminated at this stage, regardless of financial performance.
Financial Ratio Review
For equities that pass the sector screen, we review financial ratios — assessing the proportion of interest-based income, debt ratios, and other financial metrics that indicate Shariah compliance.
Portfolio Construction
Screened assets are assembled into a portfolio aligned with the client's goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon — maintaining diversification within Halal boundaries.
Ongoing Review
Business activities change over time. Portfolios are reviewed regularly — with independent verification through our screening partners — to ensure continued Shariah compliance.

We work with specialist Shariah screening organisations to independently verify the compliance of our investment recommendations.

Anyone who wants to avoid harm-causing industries or interest-bearing instruments may find Halal investing aligned with their values.
More Questions About Halal Investing.
Islamic banking is not legal in India under current RBI regulations. What exists are Shariah-compliant investment products — mutual funds, equity portfolios, digital gold — managed through regulated channels. We advise strictly within this legal framework.
This is precisely why ongoing compliance review is essential. When a company makes material changes to its business — entering a prohibited sector, increasing interest-based debt beyond accepted ratios — we are notified by our screening partners and evaluate whether to exit the position.
Absolutely. Shariah-compliant investing appeals to anyone who values ethical, transparent, and speculation-free investment. Several of our clients invest in Halal products primarily for their ethical characteristics, not for religious reasons.
